Shaily Dadiala (ACG ’12) of Usiloquy Dance Designs will perform “Indian Steps and Sounds” at the Crane Arts Old School – The White Space (1427 N. 2nd Street) on Saturday, August 18 at 7:00pm. Based on the techniques of 2000-year-old South Indian classical dance Bharatanatyam, this performance focuses on the aspect of East Indian indentured labor to South American countries and the resultant preserved music traditions.
Raices Culturales Latinoamericanas collaborates with Usiloquy Dance Designs to present this performance, the first of its kind in the Fishtown-Kensington neighborhood.
“We want to highlight the braided art and history of South Asia and Latin America” said Shaily and Veronica Castillo- Perez, Executive Director of Raices Culturales.
“Indian Steps and Sounds” is a contemporary, cross cultural exploration via the fundamental components of percussive footwork and facial mime that characterize Indian Classical dance. Two introductory Bharatanatyam workshops leading up to the performance were met with great enthusiasm and repeat participants.
