Marta Sanchez (LTA ’10, ACG ’06) presents Arte Bendito/Arte Filantrópico, (Blessed Art/ Philanthropic Art) June 15 through July 15 at Lorenzo Homar Gallery at Taller Puertorriqueño (2721 North 5th Street) . The exhibition is a compilation of three art installations and a series of recent small paintings that interweave iconography, narrative landscapes and still lives. About Marta Sanchez
Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Chicana painter Marta Sanchez is deeply inspired by traditional Mexican folk art expressions. Marta Sanchez is recognized primarily for her ex-voto /retablos formatted paintings, an offspring of traditional Mexican prayer paintings. These soulful works on metal capture the deepest held wishes and dreams of her subjects, as if the artist were lighting a candle in prayer for her subject. Her works on paper are mostly linocuts and monotypes that also follow the social and cultural traditions of Mexican and Chicano/a Art./ Marta Sanchez nació y creció en San Antonio, Texas y su carrera como artista ha sido profundamente inspirada por expresiones folclóricas mexicanas. Se le conoce principalmente por sus pinturas en retablos. Su técnica y trabajo en metal y papel siguen de igual manera las tradiciones de arte mexicanas y chicanas.
Her work is in the collections of The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, The McNay Art Museum, The Fine Art Museum of St. Petersburg, Florida and The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. Marta’s work is part of actor/director Cheech Marin’s extensive private collection of Chicano Art. She participated in “Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge” which traveled throughout the United States, touring from 2001 to 2006. This year Marta is also included in Mr. Marin’s new exhibition, ”Chicanitas/size does not matter,” featuring small works from his collection. “Chicanitas” is currently at the Mesa Contemporary Museum of Art in Mesa Arizona with plans to travel throughout the United States. Marta will also be participating in an international traveling exhibition titled “WE ARE YOU”, a five-year traveling exhibition reflecting the life of Latino/as in America. This show is scheduled to begin in January of 2012 in New York City and travel throughout Europe. Marta’ s public art commissions can be seen in the Philadelphia area at Simons Recreation Center and The Children’s Hospital in Montgomery, Pennsylvania./ Sus obras forman parte de colecciones del Museo de Arte de Filadelfia, del Museo del Estado de Pennsylvania, del Museo Nacional de Arte Mexicano en Chicago y otros.
