Betty Leacraft (ACG 09, WOO ’99) will be showing her piece “Improvisational Pathways: Masters and Proteges” as part of the Textural Rhythms: Constructing the Jazz Tradition, Contemporary African American Quilts exhibit at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. Curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, Textural Rhythms showcases quilts that pay tribute to jazz musicians, that speak of the intersection of African American culture or personal experience and jazz, and that strive to evoke in fabric of some of jazz music’s distinctive aural qualities. The show opens on Friday, January 28, 2011 and runs through April 24, 2011. The exhibition is accompanied by a wide array of events, from workshops to artist demonstrations to film screenings. Textural Rhythms: Constructing the Jazz Tradition

Textural Rhythms, curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, Founder and Coordinator of The Women of Color Quilters Network unites two of the most well known and popular artistic forms in African American culture, jazz and quilts. The exhibition includes work from some of America’s best known African American quilters, Michael Cummings, Edjohnetta Miller, Tina Brewer, and Jim Smoote as well as quilts by top Bay Area quilters, Marion Coleman and Alice M. Beasley.
Support for the exhibition and accompanying programs was received from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, The St. Regis San Francisco, and Alliance for California Traditional Arts Agency. MoAD receives ongoing support from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, foundations, corporations and individuals including its Board of Directors, members and patrons.
