El Sol Sale Para Todos, directed by Leticia Roa Nixon (ACG ’09), Laura Deutch (ACG ’10), and Carlos Pascual Sanchez, is a documentary that chronicles the rapid growth of the Mexican community in the historically immigrant neighborhood of South Philadelphia. The film will screen on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at 5pm at JUNTOS/Casa De Los Soles (2029 S. 8th St., Philadelphia, PA) alongside Echeleganas: A Life Left Behind. A second screening will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 2pm at Moonstone Arts Center (110A S. 13th St., Philadelphia, PA) in conjunction with a presentation by James D. Cockroft, author of the The Mexican Revolution Then and Now. Both screenings are free and open to the public.

El Sol Sale Para Todos chronicles the rapid growth of the Mexican community in the historically immigrant neighborhood of South Philadelphia. Told through the first hand experiences of the main subjects who have been a formative part of this development over the last 20 years, a collective story of the community unfolds. However with growth and assimilation, come problems, resistance and efforts to organize. El Sol Sale Para Todos presents stories from the subjects’ memories, reflections and perspectives about the complexity of searching for a better life in a country that is not one’s own.
El Sol Sale Para Todos documenta el rápido crecimiento de la comunidad mexicana en el Sur de Filadelfia una zona históricamente de inmigrantes. Narrado a través de las historias orales de los entrevistados quienes han sido parte integral del desarrarrollo durante los últimos 20 años, surge una historia colectiva comunitaria. Sin embargo con el crecimiento y la asimilación se originan problemas, resistencia y esfuerzos para organizarse. El Sol Sale Para Todos presenta historias basadas en los recuerdos de los entrevistados, reflexiones y perspectives acerca de la complejidad de buscar una mejor vida en un país que no es el propio.

“Echeleganas: A Life Left Behind” is a portrait of a rural Mexican community impacted by the necessity of its residents to leave home in search of economically satisfying opportunities in the North. It shows the ways in which their communities are changing, often as a direct result of the financial aid they are able to send to their families.
