Zoe Strauss to Exhibit Photography Installation Under I-95

Photographer and installation artist Zoe Strauss (SA ’02) will exhibit 231 photographs, new and selected, on Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm under I-95 at Front St. and Mifflin St. in South Philadelphia. The exhibition is free and open to the public, color photocopies of the photos included in the exhibit will be available for purchase at $5 each. Zoe’s new book America will also be available for purchase.

This will be the final exhibit of Zoe’s ongoing 10-year photo installation project Under I-95 in South Philadelphia.

Since 2000 Ms. Strauss has has published her book America, a collection of photographs which was picked as an Artforum “Best Book of 2008.” Zoe has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the 2006 Whitney Biennial, and has work currently in the Philadelphia Museum of Art ‘s permanent collection. As an artist Zoe Strauss has spent  time in Spain teaching and having an exhibit in conjunction with La Casa Encendida and Ivory Press, received a United States Artists fellowship, spent time working in Alaska courtesy of USArtists and Rasmuson, showcased in France, had two solo shows at Silverstein Photography, received a 2004 Arcadia Works on Paper Award and a 2005 Pew Fellow Award.

Zoe is currently exhibiting in the The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at University of Pennsylvania until July 30, 2010. The Ramp Project this spring transforms ICA’s ramp space with an installation of photographs and a slide show. Strauss wraps the windows of the 36th Street façade with a large scale blow-up of one image focusing on themes of desire, in all of its beauty and repulsion.
