Posted by: leeway on: 11 June 2009

Pasión y Arte, led by Artistic Director Elba Hevia y Vaca (ACG ‘08, WOO ‘04), will perform at the Kimmel Center’s Summer Solstice on Saturday, June 20 at 8:15pm in the Commonwealth Plaza. Tickets for the festival, which begins at 3pm, are $10/adults $5/children. Tickets can be purchased at kimmelcenter.org or by calling 215-893-1999.

The Philadelphia-based flamenco group will perform provocative, innovative and original works of flamenco. The performance will include excerpts from the work in progress El Duelo (The Wake), a meditation on grief and mourning which will be premiering at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival this September. The all-female dance company’s performance will feature the cante (singer) Barbara Martinez, the guitarist Raphael Brunn, and the dancer Anna Menendez, a visiting performer from Washington D.C.

Pasión y Arte is a non-profit all-female Flamenco Company, founded in 2000. Hevia y Vaca describes the group as a “vehicle for social change. It is the way I share my vision for women and the way I express and expand on my personal power; and also in this way the power and role of women inside the Flamenco tradition and society.” Pasión y Arte was founded with the conviction that the highly stylized Flamenco art form is an ideal vessel to empower women, and is a vehicle to exemplify women’s physical strength and express their personal tragedies and triumphs. Their mission is to create works that will educate and stimulate the community with the versatility of the tradition while honoring a bold and aggressive stance for the women in Flamenco
